26, 2032: Sunday
9:30 PM
With a sharp audible inhale, Sarah scooted her rear end away from the back door.
Taking a deep breath, Kid jumped out of the back of the truck. As his feet hit the water, a wave charged under the truck and rolled up his legs. Instinctively, he lifted his coat. His shirt came up with it and the icy cold water hit his bare stomach. A second later, the water temperature registered with his senses and he had a quick, spasmodic chill.
“You've got to be kidding me Brian,” Kid yelled as he realized how bad the situation was. “Were we driving to Portugal?” sarcastic even with his voice raised and trembling.
Out over the ocean, Kid could see only blackness. He feared the tidal storm surge was dangerously close to making landfall. “Drop it into neutral and keep the idle up or else you’re going to stall,” Kid yelled.
Jess jumped out of the truck, and being a little shorter than Kid, he gasped as the water splashed halfway up his midsection.
Running up the beach, Kid said, “We have to tear out a few sections of dune fence. I can’t think of anything else, and we don’t have much time.”
With great urgency, they ripped out two long sections of dune fence and made their way back to the truck.
“Hate to tell you, but we can’t shimmy the tires unless we get the fence under the tires,” Jess concluded. “You know what that means.”
“Just perfect.” This meant that they would have to put their heads completely under the frigid water. They both took off their coats and handed them through the window to Heidi.
Brian idled at 3,000 rpm’s as the waves splashed against, and over, his hood.
